LEGISLATIVE RFERENCE SERVICE Salaries: To enable the Librarian of Congress to employ competent persons to gather, classify, and make available, in translations, indexes, digests, compilations, and bulletins, and otherwise, data for or bearing upon legislation, and to render such data serviceable to Congress, and committees and Members thereof, and for printing and binding the digests of public general bills, and including not to exceed $5,700 for employees engaged on piece work and work by the day or hour at rates to be fixed by the Librarian, $130,950: Provided, That not more than $20,000 of this sum shall be used for preparation and reproduction of copies of the Digest of General Public Bills. DISTRIBUTION OF CARD INDEXES Salaries and expenses: For the distribution of card indexes and other publications of the Library, including personal services, freight charges (not exceeding $500), expressage, postage, traveling expenses connected with such distribution, expenses of attendance at meetings when incurred on the written authority and direction of the Libra- rian, and including not to exceed $76,000 for employees engaged in piece work and work by the day or hour and for extra special services of regular employees at rates to be fixed by the Librarian; in all, $251,760. INDEX TO STATE LEGISLATION Salaries and expenses: To enable the Librarian of Congress to prepare an index to the legislation of the several States, together with a supplemental digest of the more important legislation, as authorized and directed by the Act entitled "An Act providing for the preparation of a biennial index to State legislation", approved February 10, 1927 (2 U. S. C. 164, 165), including personal and other services within and without the District of Columbia, including not to exceed $2,500 for special and temporary services at rates to be fixed by the Librarian, travel, necessary material and apparatus, and for printing and binding the indexes and digests of State legislation for official distribution only, and other printing and binding incident to the work of compilation, stationery, and incidentals, $39,200. SUNDAY OPENING Salaries: To enable the Library of Congress to be kept open for reference use on Sundays and on holidays within the discretion of the Librarian, including the extra services of employees and the serv- ices of additional employees under the Librarian, at rates to be fixed by the Librarian, $26,018. UNION CATALOGUES Salaries and expenses: To continue the development and mainte- nance of the Union Catalogues, including personal services within and without the District of Columbia (and not to exceed $700 for special and temporary services, including extra special services of regular employees, at rates to be fixed by the Librarian), travel, nec- essary material and apparatus, stationery, photostat supplies, and incidentals, $26,180. INCREASE OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS General increase of Library: For purchase of books, miscellaneous periodicals and newspapers, photo-copying supplies and photo-copy- ig labor, and all other material for the increase of the Library, [55 STAT.
