[CHAPTER 540] AN ACT For the relief of the estate of Max Adams Shepard. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to pay, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, to Edwin M. J. Kretzman, administrator of the estate of Max Adams Shepard, the sum of $5,000, in full satisfaction of his claim against the United States for compensation for damages resulting from fatal injuries sustained by Max Adams Shepard on the 28th day of June 1939, when struck by a truck of the Civilian Conservation Corps on Highway Numbered 30 near Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyoming: Provided, That no part of the amount appropriated in this Act in excess of 10 per centum thereof shall be paid or delivered to or received by any agent or agents, attorney or attorneys, on account of services rendered in connection with said claim. It shall be unlaw- ful for any agent or agents, attorney or attorneys, to exact, collect, withhold, or receive any sum of the amount appropriated in this Act in excess of 10 per centum thereof on account of services ren- dered in connection with said claim, any contract to the contrary notwithstanding. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to pay, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, the sum of $500 to Augusta Brassil, Washington, District of Columbia, in full settlement of all claims against the United States on account of personal injuries and property damage sustained by her when a car in which she was riding was struck by a Civilian Conservation Corps truck which had been allocated to the Soil Conservation Service of the Department of Agriculture, on June 24, 1937, on Central Avenue, one mile west of Davidsonville, Maryland, said acci- dent being due to the negligence of the driver of said truck: Pro- vided, That no part of the amount appropriated in this Act in excess of 10 per centum thereof shall be paid or delivered to or received by any agent or attorney on account of service rendered in connection with this claim, and the same shall be unlawful, any contract to the contrary notwithstanding.
