62 STAT.] 80TH CONG., 2D SESS.-CHS. 769-771-JUNE 30, 1948 [CHAPTER 769] AN ACT 1171 Authorizing the Secretary of the Interior to issue patents for lands held under [H. R. 6091] color of title. [Public Law 856] Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That if within five years after passage of this Act it shall be shown to the satisfaction of the Secretary of the Interior that a tract or tracts of public land in Monroe County in the State of Michigan, not exceeding in the aggre- gate one hundred and sixty acres, has or have been held in good faith and in peaceable, adverse possession by a citizen of the United States, his ancestors or grantors, for more than twenty years prior to the approval of this Act under claim or color of title, and that improve- ments have been placed on such land or some part thereof has been reduced to cultivation, the Secretary shall, upon the payment of $1.25 per acre, cause a patent or patents to issue for such land to any such citizen: Provided,That the term "citizen", as used herein, shall be held to include a corporation organized under the laws of the United States or any State or Territory thereof. R. 6162] the internal-revenue tax on fermented liquor. [Public Law 857] Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the first sen- tence of section 3150 (a) of the Internal Revenue Code (imposing a tax on fermented liquors) is amended to read as follows: "There shall be levied and collected on all beer, lager beer, ale, porter, and other similar fermented liquor, containing one-half of 1 per centum, or more, of alcohol brewed or manufactured and sold, or removed for consump- tion or sale, within the United States, or imported into the United States, by whatever name such liquors may be called, a tax of $7 for every barrel containing not more than thirty-one gallons, and at a like rate for any other quantity or for the fractional parts of a barrel authorized and defined by law'. SEc. 2. That section 3150 (a) of the Internal Revenue Code is fur- ther amended by inserting between the first and second sentences thereof the following sentence: "Imported fermented malt liquors shall, during the continuance of the war-tax rate on fermented malt liquors prescribed in section 1650, be subject to tax at such rate in lieu of the rate hereinbefore prescribed". SEC. 3. The amendment made by this Act shall take effect on the first day of the first month which begins at least ten days after the date of the enactment of this Act. Approved June 30, 1948.
