SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Salaries and expenses, Smithsonian Institution: For all necessary expenses for the preservation, exhibition, and increase of collections from the surveying and exploring expeditions of the Government and from other sources; for the system of international exchanges between the United States and foreign countries; for anthropological researches among the American Indians and the natives of lands under the jurisdiction or protection of the United States, independently or in cooperation with State, educational, and scientific organizations in the United States, and the excavation and preservation of archeological remains; for maintenance of the Astrophysical Observatory and making necessary observations in high altitudes; for the administration of the National Collection of Fine A r t s; for the administration, construction, and maintenance of laboratory and other facilities on Barro Colorado Island, Canal Zone, under the 4t^trsc'^i^3 8i- provisions of the Act of July 2, 1940, as amended by the provisions 1387. of Keorganization Plan Numbered 3 of 1946; for the maintenance 5°use* i33y-i6 ^ud administration of a national air museum as authorized by the "°M*Stat. 997. ^ c t of August 12, 1946 (20 U.S.C. 77); including not to exceed $35,000 for services as authorized by section 15 of the Act of August 2, 60 Stat. 810. 1946 (5 U.S.C. 55a); not to exceed $15,225 for expenses of travel; purchase, repair, and cleaning of uniforms for guards and elevator conductors; repairs and alterations of buildings and approaches; and preparation of manuscripts, drawings, and illustrations for publications; $3,000,000. Salaries and expenses. National Gallery of A r t: For the upkeep and operation of the National Gallery of Art, the protection and care of the works of art therein, and administrative expenses incident thereto, as authorized by the Act of March 24, 1937 (50 Stat. 51), as 20 USC 74V* amended by the public resolution of April 13, 1939 (Public Resolution 9, Seventy-sixth Congress), including services as authorized by 60 Stat. 810. section 15 of the Act of August 2, 1946 (5 U.S.C. 55a); payment in advance when authorized by the treasurer of the Gallery for membership in library, museum, and art associations or societies whose publications or services are available to members only, or to members at a price lower than to the general public; purchase, repair, and cleaning of uniforms for guards and elevator operators; purchase or rental of devices and services for protecting buildings and contents thereof, and maintenance and repair of buildings, approaches, and grounds; purchase of one passenger motor vehicle, for replacement only; not to exceed $1,800 for expenses of travel; and not to exceed $15,000 for restoration and repair of works of art for the National Gallery of Art by contracts made, without advertising, with individuals, firms, or organizations at such rates or prices and under such terms and conditions as the Gallery may deem proper; $1,300,000. S U B V E R S IV E ACT IV I T I E S CONTROL B O A R D Salaries and expenses: For necessary expenses of the Subversive Activities Control Board, including services as authorized by section 60 Stat. 810. 15 of the Act of August 2, 1946 (5 U.S.C. 55a), not to exceed $12,500 for expenses of travel, and not to exceed $100 for the purchase of newspapers and periodicals, $170,000, together with not to exceed $115,000 of the unobligated balance of funds appropriated for this purpose in the "First Independent Offices Appropriation Act, 1954" 6 7 Stat. 3 11, and "The Supplemental Appropriation Act, 1954".
