AN ACT Making appropriations for the Department of the Interior and related agencies for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1957, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the following inJeri^^TReiS-' sums are appropriated, out of any money in the Treasury not other- ed Agencies APwise appropriated, for the Department of the Interior and related P^^^P'^®***'" ^ct, agencies for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1957, namely: TITLE I—DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY RESEARCH I N THE UTILIZATION OF SALINE WATER

For expenses necessary to carry out provisions of the Act of July 3, 1952, as amended (66 Stat. 328 and 69 Stat. 198), authorizing studies of the conversion of saline water for beneficial consumptive uses, $550,000.

OFFICE OF OIL AND GAS

For necessary expenses to enable the Secretary to discharge his responsibilities with respect to oil and gas, including cooperation with the petroleum industry and State authorities in the production, processing, and utilization of petroleum and its products, and natural gas; and for controlling the interstate shipment of contraband oil as required by law (15 \j. S. C. 715); including purchase of not to exceed two passenger motor vehicles for replacement only; $413,800.

OFFICE OF THE SOLICITOR

For necessary expenses of the Office of the Solicitor, $2,835,000, and in addition, not to exceed $100,000 may be reimbursed or transferred to this appropriation from other accounts available to the Department of the Interior: Provided, That hearing officers appointed for Indian probate work need not be appointed pursuant to the Administrative Procedure Act (60 Stat. 237), as amended. For expenses necessary to enable the Secretary to discharge his responsibilities, including cooperation with the metals and minerals industry, with respect to the conservation, exploration, development, production, and utilization of mineral resources, including solid fuels, $300,000. For expenses necessary for protection, use, improvement, development, disposal, cadastral urveying, classification, and performance of other functions, as authorized by law, in the management of lands and their resources under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management, including $35,000 for the operation and maintenance of access roads on the revested Oregon and California Railroad grant lands, $18,369,300: Provided, That this appropriation may be expended on a reimbursable basis for surveys of lands other than those under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management: Provided fur69225 O - 5 7 - 2 1 ( V o l. 70)
