Public Law 85-845 JOINT RESOLUTION ^, ^ ^,, ^,^,^ Requiring the Secretary of Commerce to submit certain recommendations for [H. J. Re»i. 654] legislation for the purpose of assisting Congress to determine whether or not to reimburse States for certain highways on the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways.

Whereas by section 114 of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 Con- 70 sta^. 384. gress declared that it was its intent and policy to determine whether or not the Federal Government should equitably reimburse any State for a portion of a highway which is on the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, whether toll or free, the construction of which has been completed subsequent to August 2, 1947, or which is either in actual use or under construction by contract, for completion, awarded not later than June 30, 1957, if such highways meet the standards required for such National System of Interstate and Defense Highways; and Whereas that section further required that a study be made by the Secretary of Commerce to determine which highways in the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways measure up to the standards required by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956; and 7o ^ta^ 374^^ Whereas the report required of the Secretary of Commerce by section les. "° *' 114 of the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 has been submitted to Congress and has been printed as House Document 301 of the Eighty-fifth Congress, second session; and Whereas in order to further assist Congress in making its determination of whether or not reimbursement should be made to the States for such highways or portions thereof certain further assistance and information is required: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the Secretary of Highways. Commerce shall within ten days after the first day of the first session reco1ii^nditf<^f. of the Eighty-sixth Congress submit to Congress recommendations for legislation for the purpose of assisting Congress to determine whether or not to reimburse each State for any portion of a toll or free highway (1) which is on the National System of Interstate and 23 USC 151 note. Defense Highways, (2) which meets the standards required by the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 for such National System of Interstate and Defense Highw^ays, and (3) the construction of which has been completed since August 2, 1947, or which has been in actual use or under construction by contract, for completion, awarded not later than June 30, 1957.
