REPAIRS A N D IMPROVEMENTS
For necessary repairs and improvements to the Court of Claims buildings, to be expended under the supervision of the Architect of the Capitol, $9,500. COURTS or APPEALS, DISTRICT COURTS, AND OTHER JUDICIAL SERVICES SALARIES OF J U D G E S
For salaries of circuit judges; district judges (including judges of the district courts of the Virgin Islands, the Panama Canal Zone, and G u a m); justices and judges retired or resigned under title 28, United States Code, sections 371, 372, and 373; and annuities of widows of Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States in accordance with title 28, United States Code, section 375; $10,860,000.

SALARIES OF S U P P O R T I N G P E R S O N N E L
For salaries of all officials and employees of the Federal Judiciary, not otherwise specifically provided for, $27,000,000: Provided, That the compensation of secretaries and law clerks of circuit and district judges shall be fixed by the Director of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts without regard to the Classification Act of 1949, as amended, except that the salary of a secretary shall conform 5 USC io7i with that of the General Schedule grades (GS) 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10, "°^',e, p. 843. as the appointing judge shall determine, and the salary of a law clerk shall conform with that of the General Schedule grades (GS) 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12, as the appointing judge shall determine, subject to review by the Judicial Conference of the United States if requested by the Director, such determination by the judge otherwise to be final: Provided furtlier^ That (exclusive of step increases corresponding with those provided for by title VII of the Classification Act of 1949, Ant&, p- 847. as amended, and of compensation paid for temporary assistance needed because of an emergency) the aggregate salaries paid to secretaries and law clerks appointed by one judge shall not exceed $15,950 per annum, except in the case of the chief judge of each circuit and the chief judge of each district court having five or more district judges, in which case the aggregate salaries shall not exceed $21,305 per annum. For fees, expenses, and costs of jurors; compensation of jury commissioners; fees of United States commissioners and other committing magistrates acting under title 18, United States Code, section 3041; and compensation of voting referees fixed by the court pursuant to the provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1960 (74 Stat. 8 6); $5,800,000: Provided, That $300,000 of the foregoing amount shall be available for the payment of obligations incurred under the appropriation for similar purposes for the preceding fiscal year. TRAVEL AND M I S C E L L A N E O U S E X P E N S E S
For necessary travel and miscellaneous expenses, not otherwise provided for, incurred by the Judiciary, including the purchase of firearms and ammunition, and the cost of contract statistical services for the office of Register of Wills of the District of Columbia, $4,600,000: Provided, That this sum shall be available in an amount not to exceed $16,500 for expenses of attendance at meetings concerned with the work of Federal probation when incurred on the written authorization
