SEC. 19. (a) Except as otherwise provided, the amendments made by Effective dates, this Act shall become effective January 1, 1962. (b) The amendments made by section 6 and section 12 of this Act shall each become effective on the date stated in regulations implementing each of such sections and published in the Federal Register, Publication in or sixty days after the date of enactment of this Act, whichever is F. Public Law 87-536 AN ACT To amend section 6(d) of the Universal Military Training and Service Act (50 App. U.S.C 456(d)) to authorize certain persons who complete a Reserve Officers' Training Corps program to be appointed as commissioned officers in the Coas,t and Geodetic Survey.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That section 6(d) coast and Geoof the Universal Military Training and Service Act (50 App. U.S.C. 'Ror^^rad456(d)) is amended— uates. ^ " (1) by amending the fourth sentence of paragraph (1) by ^^ ^^^*- ^ striking out the word "Upon" and inserting the words "Except ^'" as provided in paragraph (5), upon" in place thereof; and (2) by adding the following new paragraph at the end thereof: "(5) Notwithstanding paragraph (1), upon the successful completion by any person of the required course of instruction under any Reserve Officers' Training Corps program listed in clause (A) of the first sentence of paragraph (1) and subject to the approval of the Secretary of the military department having jurisdiction over him, such person may, without being relieved or his obligation under that sentence, be tendered, and accept, a commission in the Coast and Geodetic Survey instead of a commission in the appropriate reserve component of the Armed Forces. I f he does not serve on active duty as a commissioned officer of the Coast and Geodetic Survey for at least six years, he shall, upon discharge therefrom, be tendered a commission in the appropriate reserve component of the Armed Forces, if he is otherwise qualified for such appointment, and, in fulfillment of his obligation under the first sentence of paragraph (1), remain a member of a reserve component until the sixth anniversary of the receipt of his commission in the Coast and Geodetic Survey. While a member of a reserve component he may, in addition to as otherwise provided by law, be ordered to active duty for such period that, when added to the period he served on active duty as a commissioned officer of the Cfoast and Geodetic Survey, equals two years."
