A Proclamation
WHEREAS the United States of America, its territories and possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico contain many sites of historic significance and scenic grandeur; and WHEREAS an appreciation for and understanding of this country is heightened by a keener awareness of its historic places and remarkable beauties; and WHEREAS the Federal Government and the States have developed vast areas of recreational facilities to serve our people; and WHEREAS the Congress, by a joint resolution approved August 11, 1964, has requested the President to issue a proclamation designating the years 1964 and 1965 as a period to see the United States: NOW, THEREFORE, I, LYNDON B. JOHNSON, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate the years 1964 and 1965 as a period in which all persons are especially invited to see the United States. I urge our own citizens, and all other people, to visit our historic shrines and our natural wonders during this period, and to explore and enjoy our great recreational areas and facilities. I invite private industry and interested private organizations during this period to encourage both American citizens and citizens of other countries to explore, use, and enjoy the scenic, historical, and recreational areas and facilities throughout the United States of America, its territories and possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. I N W I T N E S S WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States of America to be affixed.
