Public Law 95-180 95th Congress An Act Nov. 15, 1977 [H.R. 9512]
To amend the Higher Education Act of 1865 to include the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands in the definition of the term "State" for the purpose of participation in programs authorized by that Act.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Higher Education United States of America in Congress assembled, That (a) subsection Act of 1965, (b) of section 1201 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 is amended amendment. to read as follows: 20 USC 1141. "(b) The term 'State' includes, in addition to the several States of the Union, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, the government of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.". (b) Subsection (a) of section 491 of the Higher Education Act of 20 USC 1088. 1965 is amended by striking out "includes the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands" and inserting in lieu thereof "has the meaning set forth in section 1201(b)". (c) Sections 602(a)(2), 1001(b)(2), and 1012(a) of the Higher 20 USC 1122, Education Act of 1965 are each amended by inserting ", the govern1135, 1135a-l. ment of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands" after "American Samoa". 20 USC 1141 (d) Nothing in this Act, the Higher Education Act of 1965, or any note. other provision of law shall invalidate any payments or other benefits provided under the Higher Education Act of 1965 to an agency or institution in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands or to the government of the Northern Mariana Islands prior to the enactment of this Act.
