Whereas the incidence and prevalence of myasthenia gravis present a significant health problem in the United States; Whereas myasthenia gravis is a severe neuromuscular disorder, characterized by weakness of the voluntary muscles of the body; Whereas an estimated one hundred thousand to two hundred thou- sand diagnosed, and over one hundred thousand undiagnosed, Americans of both sexes, and all races and ages, are afflicted with the disease; Whereas the Nation faces a continuing need to support innovative research into the causes, treatment, and cure of myasthenia gravis; and Whereas it is appropriate to focus the Nation's attention upon the problem of myasthenia gravis: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the week of October 2 through October 8, 1983, is designated as "Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Week" and the President of the United States is author- ized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon all govern- ment agencies and the people of the United States to observe the week with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.
