Whereas the year 1985 marks the seventeenth anniversary of the passage of title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 as amended (commonly referred to as the "Federal Fair Housing Act"), declaring a national policy to provide for fair housing throughout the United States; Whereas the Federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; Whereas fairness is the foundation of our way of life and reflects the best of our traditional American values; Whereas invidious discriminatory housing practices undermine the strength and vitality of America and her people; and Whereas in this seventeenth year since the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act, we must work to strengthen enforcement of fair housing laws for all Americans so as to make the ideal of fair housing a reality: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the month of April 1985, is designated "Fair Housing Month". The President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation designating April as "Fair Housing Month" and to invite the Governors of the several States, the chief officials of local governments, and the people of the United States to observe that month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
