FOLSOM, Marian (Mrs.), born in St. Paul, Minnesota, February 10, 1889, daughter of Charles and Ida Keeste McMillen, a resident of Los Angeles for seven years. Married to Hubert A. Folsom. Children: Iris Angler, Burney McMillen. Engaged in newspaper (feature) work. A graduate of Central High, spending three years as an art and music student in St. Agatha's Academy and St. Paul Art Institute. Entered newspaper fields in California in the first edition of “Morning Sun,” Long Beach, in 1923. For three years, editor of Music and Drama School department. FOLTZ, Clara Shortridge (Mrs.), a native of Indiana, daughter of Elias W. and Telitha Harwood Shortridge. Married to the late Jeremiah Ricliard Foltz. Children: David M., Virginia Foltz Catron. Came to California with parents in early youth. Settled in San Jose, where she began the study of law. Was the first woman admitted to practice law on the Pacific Coast. Author of many statutes for the benefit of women. Denied admission to Hastings College of the Law solely on account of sex, she sued out a writ of mandate against its Board of Directors, and after a long-fought battle, she won her case and entered the College. She is the author of Sec. 18, Art. 20, Constitution of California, which provides that no person shall, on account of sex, be disqualified from entering upon or pursuing any lawful business, vocation, or profession. FORBES, Harrye R. P. Smith, (Mrs. Armitage S. C.), a native of Everett, Pennsylvania (formerly Bloodyrun, Pa.), daughter of William Piper and Rachel Lavina Kay Smith, former resident of London, England, living in California for 33 years. Married to the late Armitage S. C. Forbes. Writer, historian, lecturer. Originated and established the National Naval Memorial ceremony of casting flowers on the sea in memory of naval dead. Directed the work of establishing El Camino Real, designed and placed the bells along this highway, while State president of El Camino Real Ass'n. For twelve years was State or District Chairman of California History and Landmarks Dept. for California Fed. of Women's Clubs; instrumental in placing the first flag-pole on Fort Moore, also in placing flags in public schools and churches.
