FLOWER AND FRUIT

Three blossoms hung on a tree,
Three berries ripe in the sun:
One falls to the earth; one is plucked away;
One withers upon its stone.

Three maidens fair to see,
Three womanhoods scarce begun:
One is claimed by Death; one marries away;
One eats out her heart alone.
