What the numbers mean

Taken from Wikisource:List of Acts of Parliament of the English Parliament to 1600

Acts before 1962 are referenced using 'Year of reign', 'Monarch', c., 'Chapter number' — e.g. 16 Charles II c. 2 — to define a chapter of the appropriate statute book. Since 1962, the regnal year has been replaced by the calendar year. All recent Acts have a short title, or citation (e.g. Local Government Act 2003, National Health Service Act 1974).

For Acts passed prior to the Acts of Parliament (Commencement) Act 1793, the year after the Act name is in accordance with the previous law in which Acts came into effect on the first day of the session in which they were passed, and therefore may be the year before they were actually passed through Parliament.

Changes to the Interregnum

Charles I and the Interregnum is not correct. The list does not include the Commonwealth periods. Once the Civil War started non of the Parliamentary legislation received Royal consent (surprise suprise!). So it is usual to stop Charly I's legislation after his last signing and start the Interregnum from the fist bill that Parliament passed without his signature (usually called Ordinances). -- Philip Baird Shearer (talk) 17:21, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Short titles

This portal features short titles for essentially every Act. But short titles were not in general use until the 19th century, and acts repealed before then generally didn't have them. So what is the authority for all these ahistorical short titles? Hairy Dude (talk) 15:30, 23 September 2020 (UTC)
