First published with the signature "Ignoto" ("unknown"). Egerton Brydges attributed this hymn to Walter Raleigh, who frequently signed his poems "Ignoto"; other sources have disputed this attribution. Some sources attribute the poem to Henry Wotton, among whose papers a copy of this poem was found.

That Holy Cross, whence thy Salvation came;
