Information about this edition
Edition: 1900, but if an article for that date is not at hand, then another earlier year can be substituted. See also the notes below.
Source: OCR from proofread against facsimile from same source. Source links:
Contributor(s): Bob Burkhardt, John Vandenberg, Wknight94, and others.
Level of progress: Mostly incomplete. 25%.png
Notes: Some small articles in editions before 1900 (1887 etc.) got eliminated (or perhaps always moved to the supplement, as with Isidore Loewenstern) in later ones to make way for expansions of other articles. These are included here. The texts follow the version of the latest edition transcribed. If known, differences with earlier editions can be noted using extra_notes of the {{Appletons'}} template.

Fictitious entriesEdit

b:User:Vuara/Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography has a list of a few of the fictitious entries. This website has all the entries, but it looks like they can be altered by contributors. John Vandenberg 12:52, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Title and dateEdit

In all the sources I have looked at, the title is "Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography," that is the apostrophe comes after the "s" rather than before it, and "æ" is used instead of "e". also says "Appleton's", but when I checked the source said "Appletons'". There also seem to be a motley bunch of dates out there. I have a Volume I facsimile with date 1891, and my Volume VI is dated 1889. says its Volume I (link above) has a stated date of 1898 although it also gives the date 1900 on the same page. Please notice the entries for volume V are now using djvu technology, courtesy of Wknight94. Now we can use H:Side and track progress using Index:Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography (1900, volume 5).djvu. For example: Ernst Plassman. I myself have not totally grasped the implications of this, but it looks very favorable. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 18:22, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Having gotten some experience with the transclusion approach, I would say it is definitely something to aim for, but the extra work in transcribing I think dictates that initial transcriptions may be done without taking advantage of transclusion. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 21:09, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
