Usage edit

This template must be accompanied by the appropriate copyright tag. It often accompanies {{PD/US}}.

This template is used in two ways:

  • To mark a specific media file as being unsuitable for Wikimedia Commons due to the copyright policies there
  • To mark a category of media files in the same way

Parameters edit

  • expiry (optional, but highly recommended). Hides the message at the end of the given year. For example, if a work by an author who died in 1950 was first published in a country whose copyright term is life plus 70 years, expiry would be 2020, and the message would automatically disappear in 2021, when the work would be automatically placed into Category:Media now suitable for Commons.
  • why (optional, but highly recommended). Explains why this work is not acceptable at Commons.
    • Common reasons:
      • it is a non-US work that is still in copyright in the country of origin (in which case expiry should be the year it becomes PD in the country of origin, often 70 years after the author's death)
      • it is a non-US collective work of unchecked authorship (in which case expiry should be publication plus 150 years)
      • it is a test file or otherwise irrelevant outside of English Wikisource
  • parent (optional). Suppresses default categorisation into Category:Media not suitable for Commons. Set to parent=yes if this media has a "parent" category that itself belongs to Category:Media not suitable for Commons.
    • This is often used for illustrations extracted from a scan - the scan and the illustrations are all placed in a separate, edition-specific sub-category, which also uses this template.
    • Example: Category:Secrets of Crewe House
  • test (optional). Use if the reason a file is out of scope for Commons is that it is a temporary or test file, or otherwise only relevant to English Wikisource. Categorizes works into Category:Media not suitable for Commons/test.

Examples edit

Example: Most basic usage

Always show the template:

{{Do not move to Commons}}

Because expiry was not given, the category Category:Media not suitable for Commons/not listed is used.

Example: Expiry

Shows the message until December 31, 2040, but hides it starting January 1, 2041.

{{Do not move to Commons|expiry=_last year of copyright_}}
{{Do not move to Commons|expiry=2040}}
{{Do not move to Commons|expiry=1970+70}}

This categorises into Category:Media not suitable for Commons/2040.

Example: Explanation

Shows an explanation in the box. You can use both expiry and why.

{{Do not move to Commons|why=the file is not public domain in the originating country}}

Example: Category suppression

Suppress the categorisation into Category:Media not suitable for Commons. If you do this, ensure the file is categorised into a category that is a sub-category of Category:Media not suitable for Commons.

{{Do not move to Commons|expiry=2030|parent=yes}}

Example: Test file

Categorizes into Category:Media not suitable for Commons/test.

{{Do not move to Commons|test=yes}}

Example: Test file with explanation

{{Do not move to Commons|why=As a user composite with little reuse potential, it is out of scope for Wikimedia Commons. It is preserved here because it is used in a discussion on [[Index talk:Poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, 1918.djvu]].|test=yes}}
