A novella written by Stevenson and his stepson Lloyd Osbourne and published the year Stevenson died (1894). It was adapted into films four times: Ebb Tide (1922), Ebb Tide (1937), Adventure Island (1947), and Le Reflux (film) (1961).

Three beggars operate in the port of Papeete on Tahiti, including Davis, a disgraced American sea captain. Davis is hired by the U. S. Consul to take over an off-course schooner with a cargo of champagne. Its officers have died of smallpox, and no one else is ready to risk infection. [...] The lengthy voyage of the stolen ship has been described as "a microcosm of imperialist society, directed by greedy but incompetent whites, the labour supplied by long-suffering natives who fulfil their duties without orders and are true to the missionary faith which the Europeans make no pretence of respecting" Warning: template has been deprecated.
