DIEGO GARCIA, dē-ā'gō gär-thē'ä, an island of the Indian Ocean, in lat. 7° S., and long. 72° E., extends in an irregular horseshoe shape, and is 30 miles long. It belongs to an archipelago known as the Chagos Islands. It contains a spacious bay, and is very convenient for coaling purposes. The group has about 700 inhabitants, and is a dependency of Mauritius.
