Pal, Babu Bepin Chendra, Journalist, Calcutta; s. of late Babu Ramachendra Pal; b. Sylhet, 185S; came under the influence of late Keshub Chendra Sen, as a result of which he became a Brahmo; entered life as Headmaster of a High School in Cuttack; Headmaster, Arcot Narayanaswami Mudaliar’s High School, Bangalore; Librarian, City Library, Calcutta; m. the widowed niece of Babu Surendra Nath Banerjee of Calcutta; proceeded to Europe and visited England. France and America; toured in Southern India as a Missionary; took an active part in the Swadeshi movement and distinguished himself as a speaker of great force; was connected with the now defunct newspaper “The Bandematharam” of Calcutta; prosecuted for “Contempt of Court” and awarded 6 months’ simple imprisonment; again visited Southern India delivering political lectures; once more proceeded to England and stayed in London for a few years; returned to India and was arrested and prosecuted on a charge of sedition, found guilty and was awarded a month’s simple imprisonment in Bombay.
