Yates; b. 1849; joined the Army, 1867; served in the Afghan War and in the Afghan Frontier Commission, 1880-81 and 1884-88, respectively; Commissioner, Russo-Afghan Frontier, 1887-92, Consul at Muscat, 1889; Political Agent, Beluchistan, 1890; Revenue Commissioner, 1892; Consul-General for Khorasan and Seistan, 1893-98: Resident at Jodhpur, 1898; at Udaipur, 1899; Chief Commissioner, Beluchistan, 1900-05; retired and proceeded to England; unsuccessfully contested (C) Pontefract, 1906; Member, East India Association, and of National Service League: Vice-President, Tariff Reform League; Member of the Council of the Royal Geographical Society.
