PORTLAND. A city and the county seat of Jay County, Ind., 49 miles south-southeast of Fort Wayne; on the Salamanie River, and at the junction of the Lake Erie and Western and the Grand Rapids and Indiana railroads (Map: Indiana, D 2). It has a public library, established in 1900, and public buildings of considerable merit. The city is in an agricultural region which possesses a supply of natural gas. There are various manufactures, including butter tubs and cases, spokes, handles, brick, flour, etc. The waterworks and electric light plant are owned by the municipality. Population, in 1890, 3725; in 1900, 4798.
