This work originated as a sketch for a play entitled The Promise. However James was unable to generate interest in it, and it was neither published nor produced on the stage. He later reworked the material into the novel The Other House, published in 1896. In 1909 he again reworked the novel back into play form, still under the title The Other House, but again this was neither produced nor published in James' lifetime. The play was finally published in 1945.
