OBITUARY
Mr. Kirkman D. Hodgson, late member for Bristol in the Liberal interest, died at his seat, Ash-grove, Sevenoaks, on Thursday night. He retired from the representation about 18 months ago owing to illness. Mr. Hodgson was first elected for Bristol in 1870, and was returned again at the head of the poll at the general election of 1874. His health first began to fail in the autumn of 1877, and when it became only too evident that he would not be able to take his seat in the House of Commons he placed his resignation in the hands of the Liberal committee. This was in the summer of 1878, but the committee kept the resignation back until the differences in the Liberal party were healed. At last, in the short winter Session of 1878, Mr. Hodgson accepted the Chiltern Hundreds, and in the middle of December last Mr. Fry was elected to his place, as the result of a contest with Sir I. B. Guest. Mr. Hodgson sat for Bridport from March, 1857, to November 1868. The deceased gentleman was 65 years of age.
