We greatly regret to announce that Mr. Alfred Goodwin, M.A., Professor of Greek and Latin in University College, London, died on Sunday last at Hampstead, at the early age of 42. Mr. Goodwin who had held his professorship for some 15 years, was a scholar of very considerable distinction, At Oxford, he carried all before him, having been scholar of Balliol, Hertford, Ireland and Craven Scholar; Gainsford Prizeman, Derby Scholar, and first-class man in Moderations and in the Final Classical schools. He became a Fellow of Balliol soon after taking his degree in 1872, but he did not remain many years in Oxford, his election to the University College professorship carrying him off to London. He was of a somewhat retiring disposition, and was thus less well known in Oxford, and less before the world in London, than many less able men. But his sound and fine scholarship and his devotion to his work and to his pupils will not soon be forgotten by his contemporaries and friends.
