The Hollow Needle edit

Hello, You removed the titles, and keep them only in the header. You may want to have a look at the Preloader Gadget in your preferences. It helps a lot for creating headers. First create the table of contents in the main page, and then the headers are created automatically when you create a new subpage. Yann 20:32, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

2009 Archive edit

The Swiss Family Robinson, In Words of One Syllable index page edit

Xxagile, I noticed that you removed my page markers and image links in the pagelist of SFR... and then I took a few minutes to try and figure out a way to make it look nicer. I used roman numerals for the endpapers and covers, P# for the pictures and PB for the blank 'picture backs.' Does that look acceptable now? Since you did not make any comment about it, I just guessed that your concern was that it was unsightly the way it was. Doing an em dash edit

Indexes edit

The categories on the indexes seem to be removed when it is edited [1] Also, while you have been adding the categories, have you considered how the Transcription project page itself might be simplified? I find it a bit baffling, and things like the OCR button may make the categorisation (sections) of the page redundant. What do you reckon? Regards, Cygnis insignis (talk) 13:25, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Is that the only instance you've had with the category disappearing? Maybe it had something to do with the hotcat? About transcription categories,I'm not sure of them myself. I do think we should leave them as is until we figure out if the category disappearing while editing is going to be a potential problem or was just a fluke, but here are my thoughts:
  • 1 Projects with no text currently available (needing OCR)
  • 2 DJVU files with a text layer
  • 3 Projects with text available, but empty pages (needing manual copy-paste)
    • 3.1 Not started -- seems redundant to projects needing to be proofread.
  • 4 Projects needing to be proofread
  • 5 Finished projects--
  • 6 Projects with no scans
  • 7 Conflicts between different editions
  • 8 Not English
  • 9 Sets of untranscribed images
    • 9.1 Offsite
  • 10 unsorted projects--not sure what they need to be sorted by
    • 10.1 Duplicates below--needs to be updated
  • 11 Large files to be uploaded

You appear to have identified the problem correctly, the hotcat, I added it 'manually' to the 'field' "pages:" with apparent success. This may be related to a bug that previously eliminated edit summaries from any contributions to Index: namespace. Regarding the 'transcription project page':
1 - 4 are effectively the same thing (now), as far as the contributor is concerned.
5 is easily an defined, possibly unrelated, 'category', though improvements are possible.
6 is redundant, unless pdf or djvu files are known to be available.
7 requires a mainspace dab, conflict between editions is an issue relating to publication; a library (like Wikisource) would just note this fact.
8 Nü ... ?
9 = potentially a 'project', but see 1 - 4
10 me either!?
10.1 never understood what this is.
11 Terrific! for those with the bandwidth and the time to manage this, but that is unlikely to be a new and willing contributor.

Categories on Index pages. edit

When I null edit an Index page, it automatically amends the page back to Category:Index. Can I suggest that we therefore look to add the Category: Index Proofread or Validated as additional categories, rather than as replacements. Yes. I have noticed that also. I don't know the reason for it though. I thought it had something to do with the hotcat feature but that doesn't seem to be the problem. I agree with your suggestion.--Xxagile (talk) 00:05, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Upgrade complete for HotCat edit

As we have successfully can use modified version of HotCat, I have implemented the change. You will need to go back to your Gadgets and revert to the Editing Tool version, as I have moved the .js file to overwrite that file. Oh ... I found this thread from what links here, after changing Page:The Passenger Pigeon - Mershon.djvu/47. I used the online viewer to obtain a jpeg; the file type 'djvu' is great for compressing text and diagrams, not so good at illustrations. Cygnis insignis (talk) 01:18, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
To put me on the same track. Illustrations are colour with fine detail? Diagrams are black and white or grey type images? You see that they are better saved as .jpg, or .png. Not my specialty area. billinghurst (talk) 01:55, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Apologies, I did not make that very clear. DjVu will produce an image of things often found in books, such as table, diagrams, or simple maps, etc., without loss of information, despite the 'lossy' compression. Images that contain 'fine detail' or 'colour' do not reproduce well (the format was primarily designed to compress reams of text) and the loss of information is large; even as thumbs they render poorly. The example above is a zoological illustration, it was with that in mind that I used the word 'illustration', but using jpg sources would be preferable for much of the 'non-text' content of our works. The quality of the jpg images at the online flipbooks at archive.org is superior, though even larger and probably better images are accessible from other zipped formats at that site. I usually save the .jpg as .png, I didn't this time because I was lazy. I'm told that PNG is a more versatile format, all I know is that it is 10x larger. Image removed edit

The Image doesn't align with the text. It is from the previous scene. You can undo my edit if you want to. I just didn't think it fit like that as the scenes take place in two completely different places. --Xxagile (talk) 06:04, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
I think this is what is happening: The colour illustrations were printed on separate sheets which are then folded and bound with the monochrome sheets. The first image can be placed at the right scene, like the other example I added to face Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs/Scene 4#130, the appearance of the second image on the sheet, in the second half of the book, is a consequence of this. On the one hand I don't think we should intervene here, but neither should we constrained by the analogue format when it is almost certainly the result of a printer's limitation. As it stands I have interfered with your scheme, if I understand it, and included the colour image in scene 4; you may want to undo that. I also overwrote one of uploads at commons, but only noted that in the edit summary; I assumed it would be okay. Cygnis insignis (talk) 08:32, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, overwriting the image is okay. It looks clearer to me anyway :) As to the format, I personally don't like when the images don't match the text, but as I am just one person it doesn't particularly matter what is done. We can stay true to the original text. I have nothing against this image because it aligns with the text at the perfect moment. I just didn't like the other image's location because of the text issue. I posted all of the images on the front page so I wouldn't have to deal with this :( but we might as well tackle it now instead of later. We can stay true to the original book, if you prefer. "True to original text', the penny dropped for me with that expression. The publisher would have course been aware of the problem, and their solution was what indicates to he reader that there is an misalignment in the first place; the caption is a quote! Index: namespace and Categories edit

Gday Xxagile. ThomasV has undertaken a sizable update to the template for the Index: namespace, and it now has a drop down box for selecting the progress of the work. This will need to replace the HotCat methodology as Thomas has implemented as a selector within the template. As the template is now collecting data that can be metadata, I have been going through the Index pages, and updating their information, adding sort key, and other data, plus where necessary stepping to the file itself to purge the file to present the text layer. billinghurst (talk) 07:30, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

For purging, I install the clock gadget from Special:Preferences, and clicking on it purges a file. To specifically purge a File:… you need to get into the File: namespace and do this. With the new Index: setup, if you change the Scans field to be djvu it automatically creates the link through to the place. Voila! billinghurst (talk) 00:56, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
