Q1 2015 edit

Friendly poke and fyi edit

Hello & welcome "back". Good to see you active again! I just realized you weren't on my mass-notification list thingy -- even with it being compiled from the so-called top-50 contributors as of Oct. 2014 -- so after discovering your latest (Template:Country portal sidebar) & subsequent Portal: work, I thought it necessary to bring you up to "speed" a bit.

First thing I think you "need" to absorb is the [supposedly] HUGE increase in en.WS viewer traffic over the last quarter of 2014 on forward. This is worth mentioning because the likely cause of this isn't anything we've done (or cause you took off;) in particular locally but is reportedly a result of the ongoing development of the Mobile Frontend reaching the stage where accessing WS on mobile/hand-held devices became a truly implemented reality. Logically, the "focus" locally should include/consider "mobile mode" (wayyyyy down at the bottom of just about any page we host is where you'll find a link from desktop/laptop setups) as was as "desktop mode".

To make a long story short - just go look at any page with your new Portal sidebar applied first in normal desktop view (duh) followed by entering Mobile Mode (e.g. what those new devices users see). See the problem not only with your sidebar add-on but with the Portal template itself?

This is where the mass-message announcing the move to what technically amounts needed re-designs for just about everything we "use" to be as Flex (Css3, HTML5) ready as possible -- boils down to moving away from using html tables for anything BUT organizing comma-separated-like data and (somehow) recovering the H1 thru H5 heading elements for "proper" doc (DOM) structure/flow & semantic outlines. The main namespace "green" {{Header}} was just re-designed to use all divs instead of a mix of both tables and division. It went thru the proposal process "Ok" and I implemented it a day or two ago - its really the only thing I've proposed & passed in this vein so far. But do the same desktop to mobile mode view test and you'll see it renders far better than the Portal one currently does. Well I could go on & on & on... but figure best to stop. I trust you'll ask if something above didn't make sense. Prost. -- George Orwell III (talk) 03:39, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I'm still trying to catch up on what I missed. I had a quick look at the page on my phone and I can see the problems. I'll revisit the sidebar and other things soon to see how they can be adapted. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 19:50, 21 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Southern Historical Society, volume 35 and others edit

Hi, I am considering doing some work on the Southern Historical Society papers, which look like they last had significant work done on them a couple of years ago. I see they are still on your user page, so you seemed like a good person to check with. I am interested in improving the formatting a bit, and especially in un-hyphenating, both across adjacent lines and across adjacent pages. These seem like improvements to me, but I've learned on wp that one person's improvement can be another person's step backwards. Also, if you know of someone else I should check with instead, please let me know. Thanks in advance, Dictioneer (talk) 02:51, 23 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dictioneer, please wait a short while so I can contact another person who has done a lot of work on the Southern Historical Society Papers. He has made all finished volumes look consistent. I need to know where he left off, I too have worked a lot on those volumes. Too, it has not been two years since they were last worked on. They are being worked on in a consistent manner up to about volume 8 as I recall. Kind regards, —Maury (talk) 19:25, 23 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Hi Maury, no problem on waiting a little while (or a longer while, for that matter :), and sorry about my misstating the time lag: I see now that some of the volumes have been worked on much more recently. I had simply looked at Vol. 35, saw Adam had worked on it in 2012, saw the project listed on his user page, so started with him. I certainly don't want to mess up any of the work that's already been done. I might add that, having looked at the early volumes, I am impressed, especially by the table of contents sections, an area which I find very challenging. Anyhow, feel free to reply either here or on my talk page, whichever you prefer, and we'll continue discussing. Thanks for your assistance, Dictioneer (talk) 20:34, 23 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
@Dictioneer: Sorry this isn't a timely reply but it looks like this worked out anyway. I'm afraid lately I keep getting dragged away by real life whenever I think I've got time to devote to Wikisource. I would have pointed you in Maury's direction, however, so I'm superfluous here. This is more of a courtesy reply; I'm not ignoring anyone, just being pulled away a lot. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 16:49, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
No problem, I should note I'm about to test my first upload of a modified v. 35 file to Commons (I've changed p. 16, that seemed like enough for a first try). I may come back to you if things get messed up, but otherwise, you are quite right that with Maury's help I should be able to navigate this. Dictioneer (talk) 01:26, 30 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

PSM main namespace titles edit

Many thanks for your extensive contributions to the PSM project, as well as their organization into various Portals. However, I also noticed that some time ago you altered some PSM title templates in the main namespace. Every header is identical throughout the project and has been so for the past five years. They were generated from a database, designed with billinghurst's help when I knew nothing. Unless you are willing to change all 8,400 of them, otherwise please leave them alone. — Ineuw talk 21:22, 24 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

@Ineuw: You've mentioned this before. I don't think I've done anything to a PSM article (or much of anything, unfortunately) since then and I do intend to leave the headers alone. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 16:52, 26 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Technical question on Southern Historical Society, volumes 35 and 36 edit

Hi Adam, I have a question about resurrecting a bot to re-populate the pages of volumes 35-36 in the Southern Historical Society series with text from updated djvu files that I upload to commons. It looks like the bot hasn't been active since 2012 and is owned by a user who hasn't been active in several months. If you can point me at instructions to get me started (and assuming I have the authorization), I'm happy to take it from there. If you're curious, full details on my project with user Maury are at the bottom of my talk page. Thanks for any assistance you can give, Dictioneer (talk) 14:01, 6 May 2015 (UTC) ps: I have cross-posted this query with user Beeswaxcandle, so don’t feel bad if you come to this query after the fact, we all get pulled away by real-life commitments.Reply

Hi Adam, I'm on to this, so don't worry about it. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 08:34, 7 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

Continued adminship? edit

Your adminship is up for renewal, and it has been noted that you have been inactive here for some time. Do you plan to become active again? BD2412 T 04:16, 1 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I do plan to come back, and keep meaning to do so. I have had a series of problems, none of which have been serious but combined they have kept me away (early on, I had to move flat; most recently, my computer died and I need to repair it).
(NB: I've set my preferences to e-mail me when this page is edited and I've recently set up my phone to notify me of those e-mails, which it wasn't doing properly in the past, so I should at least know when I have a message. That's how I noticed this one, for example.) - AdamBMorgan (talk) 17:08, 1 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for responding. Happy editing! BD2412 T 20:48, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Adam, it is wonderful seeing you post again! All the best to you my friend!!! —Maury (talk) 08:17, 17 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Whenever ... edit

You have some subpages at A Roster of General Officers that are labelled {{under construction}}. It would be great whenever you are back to have a poke at them . Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 07:50, 5 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Typo in edit on Author:D. de Quelus? edit

Hi, was M. de Caylus (instead of D. de Caylus) in this edit intentional? Thanks! --Azertus (talk) 15:35, 4 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

I like your awesome graphs... would you help us? edit

Dear AdamBMorgan,

I have appreciated your graphs about the tenth anniversary contest (this and this). I will go straight to the point: is it possible for you to explain what scritp you used to produce those graphs? If it uses API calls we could adapt it to our need: we have just ended a triumphant contest for our thirteenth anniversary and we wanted to show our progress during those two weeks. If you can help us write down any feedbak on our local Scriptorium. - εΔω 15:03, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Weird Tales 1923 edit

I'd like to have a big blowout collection of 1923 works for when 1/1/2019 rolls around and all these works become public domain. Do you have access to digital or scannable copies of Weird Tales issues from 1923? (I have a reprint of the first issue, which is out of copyright, but I haven't got around to scanning it.) If you don't, I'll add it to the list of things I'm trying to source for 1/1/2019. I realize you're not currently active, but this is a long-term project, so if you have time in the next year and a half...--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:44, 20 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Transcribing the BHL (Biodiversity Heritage Collection) edit

I would love the BHL collection to be transcribed. Currently each user of this collection must each transcribe a text if he/she wants to use it. (The best that BHL offers to start you off is OCR which is unbelievably appalling). Can Wikisource come to some arrangement with BHL and get on with this task? Admin rights edit

Hi. As outcome of confirmation discussion, your Admin rights will be revoked. Thank you for your service during these years and hoping to see you back soon! Cheers.— Mpaa (talk) 17:09, 11 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Author:Thomas Mann edit

Referring to your question asked few years ago I found that there is only one his book published in English before 1923 (the next, Buddenbrooks, was published 1924). If you are still interested, you are welcome to help.

There were also some short stories by him published pre-1923 in various magazines, but those may be hard to find. KäthesBücher (talk) 06:40, 20 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

Weird Tales November 1953 cover edit

Cover credited to Margaret Brundage is by Virgil Finlay, not Brundage. Unfortunately, due to recent plumbing difficulties, I have access neither to my run of Weird Tales Collector nor the copy of the magazine in the box of my modest Weird Tales collection so I cannot verify this. But I'm pretty certain this is the case as, to the best of my knowledge, I own no mags with Brundage covers. Apologies for not being able to verify but I don't know where I put those boxes to keep them away from the water. I should think it would be reasonably easy to independently verify. 74.98.198.45 20:39, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Note that AdamBMorgan hasn't edited here in a number of years. It's generally better to bring issues like this to the talk page for the page in question, since no one is obliged to maintain a page and everyone can edit a page.--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:58, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
