defaultsort

For many of these bibliographic works the defaultsort is simply problematic to have set in the template. Many of the works have titles, so the defsort approach is wrong. They were set up specifically for the reason of having the defsort visible, rather than buried. If you had asked me as the author of the templates, then we could have had that discussion. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:19, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Definitions of "handbook" and "manual"

Wiktionary says that a handbook is "a topically organized book of reference on a certain field of knowledge, regardless of size". It says that a manual is the same thing as a handbook, but in only one of its senses. The second sense is different, however: "A booklet that instructs on the usage of a particular machine or product." Lots of things could be a handbook, but far less can be classified as instruction manuals for machines. If I'm looking for those instruction manuals, I don't think the Boy Scout Handbook would be useful in my search. So maybe we should have a subcategory of Handbooks, at Category:Instruction manuals (since that would be a more specific term)? PseudoSkull (talk) 15:00, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

TOC row template classes

FYI, you likely do not need hardcoded classes like this on every single cell. CSS allows you to descend the hierarchy: you only need the class on the row to allow you to do .wst-toc-row-2-1 > td:nth-child(2) to target the second cell in every 2-1 row. side by side display of endpapers

It is getting to be years ago by now, but Billinghurst made this crazy looking yet beautiful to behold image hack to make endpapers display side by side in Main. In Page:Wonder Book.djvu/2 and Page:Wonder Book.djvu/3 and the display is at A Wonder Book. I used that (and have restored it) in the Milton poem: Comus (Rackham)#ep where it actually looks even nicer!

The image templates are great, but they manage a great many situations, so I don't use them if I can make a simple style that works for whatever case I need for the Page and the Main.

If I remember the situation correctly, me and Billinghurst were arguing about using {{bc}} in Main and Billinghurst completely won this argument, hands down!

You do understand that styles found in Page: heads and foots do not affect displays in Main? They are spaces enclosed with <noinclude></noinclude> which prevents them from Main.

Mostly this is a thank you for the fix, and a sorry I need to restore the styles to the images.--RaboKarbakian (talk) 14:59, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

@Jan.Kamenicek: It's at File:W. S. Gilbert - Alice B. Woodward - The Pinafore Picture Book - Frontispiece.jpg (the duplicate is noted by the software at the bottom of the file description page). But you're right to decline the speedy, of course, since the file is still in use here under the local name. These need to be updated before the file can be deleted. PD-US-no renewal breaks categories

On author pages, like Author:Deane Montgomery, PD-US-no renewal now puts them in Category:Author-Author-PD-US-no-renewal instead of Category:Author-PD-US-no-renewal like it says it does. Prosfilaes (talk) 02:20, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

It's a caching issue. The links table (which is what Special:WhatLinksHere shows you) is not updated immediately, but rather by periodic jobs that can some times take quite a long time. I'm currently running a purge with recursive link update against any page listed as transcluding this module just to clear it out and make visible any actual remaining transclusions. Problem getting corrected and replaced PDF to show up in page scans

Hi there—perhaps you can help with this? I can't figure out why the scanned pages in the Seddon book aren't updating, after I've uploaded a corrected PDF with pages added and removed. On page 87, for example, the scanned page p88 still displays, even after I've added 87 to the re-uploaded PDF—and when I click Image that corrected p87 does indeed display, but not in the page scan. Some sort of caching problem? But I've purged all the caches I can. Advice welcomed. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 22:00, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

@Giantflightlessbirds: I see p87 when I go to that link. I suspect what's going on here is that the file itself on Wikimedia Commons needs to be hard purged so that it updates on other pages that use it. I'm not sure how to hard purge pages on Commons (it may not be an available option), but it looks like the update has propagated now. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talk • contribs) 03:41, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

I was still seeing p88 at that link, but any page I hadn't looked at yet was fine, so realised it must be local browser caching that's at fault. I did a hard refresh (Ctrl-Shift-R) which solved the problem. Thanks! —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 04:48, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
