hi edit

Hi Laverock, I saw you adding lot of entries from the britanica encyclopedia to wikisource, I wanted to know if you have a script/tool which can automatically upload the contents... Even I am in a similar situation, I need to upload lot of preexisting works to wikisource.. I was planning to implement one such tool using python and curl, but before that i want to know if a similar tool already exists, thanks. --Nvineeth 17:27, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello edit

Hi, just wanted to point out that I did seven new B areticles from your Britannica list this morning, but I was not sure of teh categorization. Danny 13:34, 21 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Category:EB1911:Buildings edit

Hello. I have seen some of the nice work you are doing on this project in recent changes so thank you. Quick question - I saw you blanked this category page, did you mean to have it deleted? If not, is there a parent category that it could go into? Cirt (talk) 18:42, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ah okay thank you. Cirt (talk) 19:08, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just to follow Cirt and say a big thank you for all your additions to the Encyclopædia Britannica pages. They're great! Suicidalhamster (talk) 19:36, 25 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

source edit

Please add the source for Compleat Surgeon somewhere, a web address if you are bringing that here. cygnis insignis 23:17, 26 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for contributing the text at MidsummerSources. I am going to move this page, since we usually name a page with the title of the work. Best, Eliyak T·C 18:44, 16 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

EB1911 and article names edit

I have moved "Digestive organs (Pathology)" to "Digestive Organs". The part in brackets was not needed for disambiguation and it did not appear in boldface in the original scan. I have capitalized "organs" to follow the current common practice in Wikisource's EB1911, a practice that follows the capitalization in the original scans apparent from article links typeset in small caps.

See also Wikisource:WikiProject 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/Style Manual#Entry titles. --Dan Polansky (talk) 08:08, 31 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have moved "De Tabley, John Byrne Leicester Warren, 3rd Baron" to "De Tabley, John Byrne Leicester Warren", thereby removing the part ", 3rd Baron", which is not boldfaced in the original scan. I have done similar renames in the past, so omitting in page titles the parts that are not boldfaced in the original scan is the current convention in EB1911. --Dan Polansky (talk) 10:26, 6 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have responded at my talk page. --Dan Polansky (talk) 08:01, 13 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

EB1911 and capital letters edit

You seem to be one of the significant contributors to EB1911. Would you care to opine at Wikisource talk:WikiProject 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/Style Manual#Capital letters in headings? --Dan Polansky (talk) 08:15, 31 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

In this post, you seem to have agreed that the use of big letters in article headings could be discontinued. But you are creating new articles that are using these big letters. May I ask what is the purpose of your doing so? --Dan Polansky (talk) 08:06, 5 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Contents rendering edit

Just a curiosity... I noticed that when viewing this page (the Feb POTM) using the Google Chrome browser, I can see the three columns; but on the same computer, when viewed using Internet Explorer, it lists the contents in a single column. Does IE not recognize the columns-list notation?

Thanks for the PotM fixes edit

I obviously missed a couple of things on my morning rollout on the day. Thanks for coming along and checking and fixing those bits. — billinghurst sDrewth 06:55, 3 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Continuing footnotes -> ref name=... and ref follow=... edit

The developer of ProofreadPage recently suggested and made changes to the extension Cite, that now allows us to utilise a format of <ref name="xxx" on the first page and <ref follow="xxx" on each subsequent page that has a continuation of the original footnote. While it had been noted onsite of the change, in reflection it was not significant, so I recently updated Help:Proofread to reflect this change. — billinghurst sDrewth 15:20, 6 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Picturesque Nepal upload conflict edit

Sorry, I think I attempted to upload File:Picturesque Nepal pg 033.jpg at the same time you did. I didn't get an error message. I'll back off and come back later. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 16:14, 3 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

EB1911 indexes edit

Thanks for your work in organizing eb1911. It is much easier to work with now. I suggest using moves instead of copying and redirecting as it preserves the edit histories better, and seems easier to me. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 01:21, 31 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Would you want to enter into a plan where I validate, and you proofread this book? - Tannertsf (talk) 22:36, 7 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Category:Articles by edit

In this edit I closed an older Wikisource:Proposed deletion. When I was doing the cleanup I saw your name on a few of the works. It looks like you might have been continuing on a path started by others, and subsequently abandoned as not the best approach, The decision was essentially made in September 2010, thought it was not officially closed and implemented until now. I apologize for any difficulties this may cause. If I can be of any assistance let me know. Jeepday (talk) 13:55, 3 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sawdust & Spangles edit

Thanks for proofreading page 137. I tried page 136. Copy and paste is not always easy. So it should be better if you'll have a look at it.WeeJeeVee (talk) 20:55, 5 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

We have {{information}} edit

I notice that you have done a job of trying to recreate the information template from Commons here. We have it already, so to make it more obvious I have added it to the editing page for File:. Probably also worthwhile adding {{do not move to Commons}} template to those sorts of files where they cannot be housed at Commons. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:34, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. As an afterthought, would it be worth adding Category:Media not suitable for Commons as a sub-category to Category:Images or Category:Image maintenance? I looked there for similar occurences to mine and didn't find them, hence my reinvention of the wheel.--Laverock ( Talk ) 08:26, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Done good thinking! To note that I have been through and updated all those recent files. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:39, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

EB1911 and transclusion edit

I am looking at 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica/Dutens, Louis and just seeing a blank page, or at least no Britannica text. Most of the transcluded work I looked at for that and nearby pages wasn't working. Do you know what the problem is? Lately I haven't been using transclusion, and when I do, I use a different style (no double pound signs), so it is difficult for me to tell what is going on. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 21:53, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, this wasn't your edit; it was the succeeding validation edit that messed things up, and I think that was less due to the editor than the editing software which auto substitutes the double pound signs, when Javascript is enabled anyway. I fixed things be restoring the section labels and removing the double pounds. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 20:26, 7 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

The Moths of the British Isles edit

Hi. I saw you started this work. If you are interested, there are scans ([1], or [2]) at IA, also with color images. I haven’t check for their integrity (no. of pages, quality etc.). Bye.--Mpaa (talk) 18:19, 2 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Romance of Nature edit

You might as well set this page up as a disambiguation page now, rather than create a problem flor later editors. The Romance of Nature is the title of a least half a dozen different books by different authors. --EncycloPetey (talk) 14:40, 3 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Fig 770 missing edit

Looking at A Complete Guide to Heraldry/Chapter 33, it is missing figure 770. Do you still have the source material available, so we can get that image? Thx. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:51, 14 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Balthasar Hübmaier pg 8 edit

Hi Laverock, do you think you could clean up the image which is on the eighth page of Balthasar Hübmaier? I've uploaded it to Commons, but I don't know how to clean it up. Sincerely—Clockery Fairfield (talk·contribs) 09:47, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks a lot. Hope you didn't mind. —Clockery Fairfield (talk·contribs) 13:10, 16 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

One more image edit

There is one more image needed at the PotM. It's on Page:Balthasar Hübmaier.djvu/424, and seaparates two sections of series advertisements. Minor, but it would be nice to have for the sake of completion, if you're up for it. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:58, 17 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've made an attempt at it, with my limited computer-preinstalled graphics program ( ). --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:35, 19 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Matthew Fontaine Maury's "New Elements Geography" edit

Laverock, would you please upload the tiny logo (or whatever it is called) shown on page http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:Maury%27s_New_Elements_of_Geography,_1907.djvu/5 ?

You have done an excellent job with all of those images! That was one heck of a confusing task! Respectfully, —Maury (talk) 15:26, 3 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource User Group edit

Wikisource, the free digital library is moving towards better implementation of book management, proofreading and uploading. All language communities are very important in Wikisource. We would like to propose a Wikisource User Group, which would be a loose, volunteer organization to facilitate outreach and foster technical development, join if you feel like helping out. This would also give a better way to share and improve the tools used in the local Wikisources. You are invited to join the mailing list 'wikisource-l' (English), the IRC channel #wikisource, the facebook page or the Wikisource twitter. As a part of the Google Summer of Code 2013, there are four projects related to Wikisource. To get the best results out of these projects, we would like your comments about them. The projects are listed at Wikisource across projects. You can find the midpoint report for developmental work done during the IEG on Wikisource here.

Maury Page 141 edit

Maury Page 141 edit

"Even using the slightly better resolution on archive.org, there were still many cases where I had to use my prejudices on pronuncication to decide what the diacritics should be, especially ī ǐ ï . And some of those which seemed clear I would dispute. I mean, the second "o" and the "a" in Cŏ-lōm'bï-ā, the "a" in Cŏl-ō-rā'dō - really? I comfort myself that nobody is seriously going to base their pronunciation on this page. Or their view of the world in general on the rest of the book, come to that:

"Many of them (African natives) used to be constantly fighting and making slaves of one another. European nations are stopping this."
"Turkey is, perhaps, the worst governed country in the world ... in fact, scarcely anything is well done in all the country."

Laverock ( Talk ) 07:59, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

All of it edit

6. Turkey is an empire consisting of many different parts. It is like a body, the head of which is in Europe, the other parts elsewhere.

Turkey is, perhaps, the worst governed country in the world, but the people now have some share in the government.

Obviously the "people did not have a share in the government and the government was viewed as one of the "worst" for some reason/s. The reasons just aren't given because it is a geography book. —Maury (talk) 09:03, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

The Emperor is called the Sultan. The land is fertile, but the farming is wretched. In fact, scarcely anything is well done in all the country.

Since the land is "fertile" there had to be reasons as to why the "farming (methods?) is wretched." The middle east as we have known it in our lifetime and before has been and remains to a great extent backwards in many ways and has been for many generations. Protests and wars have brought change to the people under rule of former "Dictators" which in the past were often the rulers and poverty was often due to the rulers, all of the economy was overseen by the rulers and rulers go by many titles such as "Sultan" —Maury (talk) 09:03, 29 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hola edit

no complaint on proofreads of the month edit

Where or who runs the complaint office? I don't mind another job and in fact I welcome it - but only if we get an award for each Proofread of the Month we finish. That's fairness. —Maury (talk) 06:22, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Beeswaxcandle seems to be the one who registers the awards, so you could ask him if there will be two this month. There usually are when multiple works are processed, unless they are very short - there were two in July and August last year, for example.--Laverock ( Talk ) 07:58, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Far be it from me to resist the wishes of two of our top POTM contributors. I've just done the awards for the first work, but you'll have to wait for the second one until it's finished. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 22:19, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Beeswaxcandle. We really worked ourselves fast and at the same time -- just as you and I have done on some of your Rover Boys adventures. Full speed ahead and handshakes across the seas! —Maury (talk) 22:34, 9 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
