Hyphenated words across a page break edit

Hi, Thanks for the work you're doing on Narrative of an Official Visit to Guatemala from Mexico. I thought I'd just drop you a note about words that are broken across a page break. We use {{hws}} at the end of the first page and {{hwe}} at the beginning of the second page. Have a look at how I've done Page:Narrative of an Official Visit to Guatemala.djvu/160 and Page:Narrative of an Official Visit to Guatemala.djvu/161 for an example of how it works. The reason we do this, is that the transclusion leaves a blank space at the end of each page unless it's over-ridden.

For more tips on things that break across pages have a look at User:Beeswaxcandle/End of page notes. It's an early version of a future help page, but it may prove useful in the meantime.

Schools of Charles the Great edit

OK, there are a few steps that need to be worked through. I'll try to explain them, but feel free to ask for clarifications where I seem to have jumped or assumed.

  1. Upload file to Commons (I've done this one already).
  2. Swap out the Information template for the Book tempate on Commons.
    1. Open the Book template in a separate tab in your browser. Copy the blank version of the template and paste it in above the Information template on the file (using the edit screen, of course).
    2. Fill out as many of the fields in the Book template as you can using the template documentation as a guide. The source field can be copied from the Information template and the permission field is the PD license from further down.
    3. Delete the Information template and the license section.
  3. Add categories to help other people find this work or similar works.
  4. Now, back here in Wikisource, create the Index page. Do this by searching for [[Index:filename]]. Use exactly the same filename as it is on Commons (but omit the File: prefix—the Index: prefix is replacing this).
  5. You will then be invited to create the page. Do so, and then fill out the form you're presented with and save.

I'll sit on your shoulder while you work through this and nudge where needed. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 22:20, 25 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I've done the first of the TOC pages and have made some initial assumptions as to how this book will be transcluded. I've assumed that the Introduction and the five chapters will be done as six separate sub-pages. From there you have some choices: a) leave the chapter sections and subsections unlinked from the TOC; b) just link the chapter sections; or c) link all the sections and subsections. Let me know what you want to do and I'll show you the techniques for making it happen.

I note that this work uses sidenotes. To make this work in the page namespace you need to put {{tl:Sidenotes begin}} in each header and {{tl:Sidenotes end}} in each footer. If the sidenotes are on the left hand side of the printed page use {{tl:Left sidenote}}, but if the sidenotes are on the right hand side of the printed page use {{tl:RL sidenote}}. What this will do is put the sidenotes on the correct side of the page in the page namespace, but will put them all on the left in the mainspace. This makes the transcluded text easier to read. Hope this all makes sense, Beeswaxcandle (talk) 09:00, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I will take Option A. Do I need to put the "tl" in the side notes thingy? I'm currently just using "side notes begin". - Lucyrocks=) (talk) 19:36, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Option A is the easy one. It's what I've already done on the first page. I'll do another page now and leave you to have a go at the others based on how I've done it. I'll check in on how you're going with them.

For the "tl," it's a mistake on my part. For some reason I've got in my head that the shorthand to insert a template name link is "tl:" instead of "tl|" What I should have typed was {{tl|Sidenotes begin}} etc. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 08:10, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ok. Sounds like a good plan - I will work on it today. So my header will have: the "rh" template (page number, heading) and "side notes begin", while the footer will contain "smallrefs" and "side notes end". Is that correct? And in the correct order? - Lucyrocks=) (talk) 12:21, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yes, that sounds right. Have fun, Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:33, 1 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pliny — text layer refreshed edit

I have popped over to Commons and refreshed the text layer on the work. From my look at one page, it looked as though you were having to manually type the page. Ugh! — billinghurst sDrewth 10:28, 24 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Uh.... I am typing it up because thats what I want to do.... - Lucyrocks=) (talk) 10:29, 24 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

File uploads to enWS edit

Gday. Generally we would be uploading files to Commons rather than to enWS, as at Commons they can be used by all. We would really only upload them here when they are not in the public domain in their home country, which does not look the case for American works. If you would stick a completed {{information}} template onto the works, add the template {{move to Commons}} and at some stage I will get them transferred over. — billinghurst sDrewth 15:33, 16 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Britannica validation edit

Your validation edit to Page:EB1911 - Volume 08.djvu/763 trashed the page. I think this was due to the editing software. I edit with Javascript disabled which gets around that problem, and others that my antiquated system has. Maybe the software has been fixed by now, or there is something you need to know to edit with Javascript enabled. I fixed the page in question, and I mention this just for your information. I suggest if you do an edit and a page looks bizarre afterwards that you go to the history and undo the edit. I appreciate your interest in Britannica. A reply to your post on my talk page edit

(copy) Hey Maury! I have been off and on on Wikisource for the past few months, and just saw your message to my cousin, Tannertsf, to "come home." His real-life got much busier, since he got married and now has a kid, and a higher-paying but more working job. Basically, he won't be back.

But, fear not! I am willing to help in any projects/works you are doing here - I am voraciously searching for stuff to do right now. Just let me know! - Lucyrocks=) (talk) 06:31, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

Please read my lengthy reply on my talk page. It's difficult for me to reply, or write, something short. This is about the shortest I can write. Kindest regards, —Maury (talk) 12:11, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Abraham Lincoln edit

Mackenziemrk, would you please validate these few proofread pages? —Maury (talk) 22:42, 25 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

No problem! Already finished them up - also proofread a few pages (hope you don't mind?) Thanks! - Lucyrocks=) (talk) 06:46, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
