PREFACE

The annual volumes of Who's Who are confined to those still living. But it has long been felt that it is not the biographies of the living only that are required.

To learn details of the career of a distinguished man recently dead, it has so far been necessary to look him up in a back volume of Who's Who. This entailed on the busy journalist, or man of affairs, the necessity for keeping the whole of the past volumes on his shelves. To obviate the biographies of all those who died between 1897 and 1916 (the first twenty years of the new issue of Who's Who) have now been re-edited and collected into the present volume, which forms a companion book to the older one, and will probably prove as indispensable.

It had been the intention of the Publishers to bring this volume out in 1916, but difficulties arising out of the war unfortunately rendered that impossible.
