Wolseley, General Sir Garnet Joseph, k.p., g.c.b., g.c.m.g., created D.C.L. 17 June, 1874 (1s. Major Garnet Joseph Wolseley), created Baron Wolseley 25 Nov., 1882, for his brilliant suppression of the military revolt in Egypt, led by Arabi Pasha; served in Burmah 1852-3, in the Crimea 1854-5, in the Indian Mutiny 1855-6, in China 1860, commanded Ashantee expedition 1874, in Egypt 1882, and Soudan 1884-5, etc., and in Red River expedition 1870, created a viscount 28 Sep., 1885.
