The composer of Pátria, the national anthem of the Democratic Republic of East Timor, and also a poet, writing the majority of his work in the Tetum language. Aside from the East Timorese anthem, his most famous known work may be the poem "Um Minuto de Silêncio" (A Minute of Silence):
