Agnes Jane Burette née McCarthy

"Madame Burette" is very likely to be Agnes Burette, a teacher of languages; her daughter Henrietta Burette was also a teacher of languages (see 1861 census), as was her daughter Louise Apel (married Heinrich Apel), who is specified as a "teacher of the German language" in the 1851 census (their son Henry Ferdinand Augustus Apel used his mother's maiden name when writing, as Henry Apel Burette)

• Born Agnes McCarthy, probably around 1799/1800/1801, either in Paris, or Ireland (based on the 1851 and 1861 censuses)
  • A family tree on Ancestry gives her mother as Heloise McCarthy (1770–1824), and her father as Eugene McCarthy (1765–1830) (n.b. I haven't seen any supporting evidence for this theory)
• About 1818, her daughter Henrietta Burette was born (died 16 August 1869 at South Street, Stepney, age 51)
• About 1821, her daughter Louise was born (married John-Jacob-Henry Apel in 1838; died 1901) more details here
• On 10 December 1821, her and Louis' daughter Isabelle Eléonore Burette was born in Dieppe, France
• On 3 June 1822, Louis Charles Burette married Agnes Jane McCarthy at St. Dunstan's Church, Stepney, London; both are said to be of that parish
• About 1828, her daughter Julienne Adelaide Burette was born (died 18 August 1851 age 23, at Celbridge Place) (her aunt and uncle Louise and Heinrich Apel were living at Celbridge Place in 1851)
• About 1835/1837, Pauline Constance Naomi Burette (possibly her daughter) was born (was a governess in Cheshire in 1851, a public singer in Hastings in 1861; married Nanton Lewis Brownsmith in 1864; died 5 June 1888)
• On 14 June 1844, she handwrote something (maybe a letter?) that is catalogued by the University of Amsterdam Library
• In the 1851 Census, she was living at 53 St. George Street, St. Pancras, without her husband:
  • "Agnes Buritte" head of the household, married (not widowed), age 50, "Teacher of Languages", born in Paris
  • Henrietta Buritte, daughter, age 25, born in Paris
  • Julianna Buritte, daughter, age 19, "Teacher of Singing & Music", born in Paris
• During the 1861 England Census, Agnes Burette was living with two of her daughters, and her grand-daughter at 3 Sydney Terrace, Lewes Street, Brighton:
  • Agnes Burette (Head), widow, 61 years old, "Teacher of languages", born in Ireland
  • Henrietta Burette (Daughter), 41 years old, also a "Teacher of languages", born in Ireland
  • Louise Apel (Daughter), 40 years old, profession "None", born in France
  • Kate Apel (Grand-daughter), 10 years old, "Scholar", born in Middlesex, London
• Died in 1863 at Brighton

Louis Charles Burette (husband)

• On 3 June 1822, Louis Charles Burette married Agnes Jane McCarthy at St. Dunstan's Church, Stepney, London; both are said to be of that parish
• In the 1841 census, living at Mary Street, St. Pancras without any family, age 43, a sculptor
• In the 1861 census, living in St. Pancras, without any family, age 64, "no occupation", born in Dieppe, France
• Died in 1866, in St. Pancras, age 70
