Common name, and not much

is supposedly covered in Modern English Biography vol 5, by Frederic Boase [1892-1921]. Leaving alone at this point in time -- billinghurst (talk) 11:20, 12 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think he wrote the DNB bio for John Taylor (1829-1893), giving as his source "The present writer's Memoir of Taylor, prefixed to his Antiquarian Essays". I haven't looked at that, or at Boase, but library catalogues for Antiquarian essays / contributed to the "Saturday review" by John Taylor. With a memoir by William George, and portrait suggest linking that to a William George (of Bristol?) who died 1900.Dsp13 (talk) 03:06, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
No obit in The Times 15-31 Jan 1900. For deaths in the March quarter 1900, there are several, though only one in Bristol (aged 69). No more specific detail to hand, would require access to Taylor's book with memoir. billinghurst (talk) 12:44, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Quite likely then that this is the author of this work, given as 1830-1831 to 1900. LibrariesWest might know more. Charles Matthews (talk) 11:08, 17 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Humph, that link is now broken, and the Wayback Machine denies responsibility. Yet there is circumstantial evidence that this is a Bristol bookseller and antiquarian. William George is said to have founded a bookshop in 1847, at age 17.[1] See reference in [2]. William Strong the bookseller mentioned there died 1846.[3]. @Charles Matthews: I would agree with your assessment about the Bristol bookseller, and the article of Taylor, and related material, definitely shows interactions and writing by the two, esp. with the 'Antiquarian Essays' that were published in "Saturday Review". I cn see evidence of them, without finding the articles themselves. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:32, 2 October 2018 (UTC)Reply
