Welcome to "The Dog". This is a P1 (beginners’ proofreading) Project, managed by User:Zoeannl. For the purpose of this exercise, I have created, and re-OCRed the pages.

Please follow the PG Proofreaders Guidelines when Proofreading, especially retaining the line-breaks as this improves the accuracy of checking against the scan. I will remove the hard returns on Transclusion. I will also collate references, and link the Table of contents on Transclusion.

It would be helpful if proofreaders note on this page (in Edit mode):

  • any uncommon spellings i.e. spelling that is not common now. E.g. to-day. These should not be {{SIC}}ed.
  • any common scannos. We will have a bot trawl through the proofread text to catch any missed.

Standard Formats edit

Automatic listing of links edit

Any links will be collated at transclusion

  • Author links
  • Publication references (to be considered for WS inclusion if not already published in WS)

Prepared Images edit

Table with image links and page numbers

{{FIS
 | file =
 | width = 500px
 | float = center
 | caption =
 | talign = center
 | tstyle = font-variant:small-caps
 | cstyle = margin-top:8px; margin-bottom:8px
}}

@Ineuw: I copied this format from Popular Science. Would you anticipate any problems using it generically for "easy" images? Cheers, Zoeannl (talk) 23:55, 3 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Zoeannl: PSM used an old version of my current design. Below is what I use now, change the name between {{FIS and {{FI, and delete the unneeded parameters.
{{FIS is <span> based for offset images which allow the text to flow around the template naturally in a single paragraph.
{{FI is <div> based and I use it for centered images. Paragraphs break into two, when floating to left or right
{{FIS
 | file         =
 | width        = px
 | float = left or right
 | margin-right = 8px
 | margin-left  = 8px
 | cstyle       = margin-top:2em; !important
 | tstyle       = font-variant:small-caps
 | talign       = center
 | top-caption  or caption =
}}
Same template altered for centered images

{{FI
 | file         =
 | width        = px
 | cstyle       = margin-top:2em; !important
 | tstyle       = font-variant:small-caps
 | talign       = center
 | top-caption  or caption =
}}

@Ineuw: Thank you! I am downloading the image by right clicking the page scan, then cropping. I want to make the background of the image white or transparent? Do you have any recommendations on how to do this? Cheers Zoeannl (talk) 23:39, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Nevermind, I just checked Help:image and there is new instructions. I'll attempt following them. Cheers Zoeannl (talk) 23:58, 4 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Zoeannl: I use Irfanview as the image tool. It's simple and powerful. I can help you with that. Also, I work with IA's .jp2 files, which are the "best quality". Then I batch convert them to .jpg or .png. Batch operations can also cleanup the image 90%. — Ineuw (talk) 00:07, 5 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
OK, step-by-step.
I am looking at files already uploaded to Commons and WS. The Dog is .djvu. The file page has the original IA address. Do I need to download the individual pages from IA as .jp2? I can do that.
I've been unable to download Irfanview on my computer. I'll ask my husband to help me tomorrow. I downloaded GIMP but I couldn't follow the instructions.
The FIS template has a page option-can I make a single document(?) with the book's images and only upload that one document to Commons?
