Coll., London, professor of English law at that univ. 1864-9, solicitor-general co. palatine of Durham 1862-9, recorder of Bolton 1865-9, author of treatises On the Law of Contracts and On Mercantile Agency, a student of Gray's Inn 2 Nov., 1838, called to the bar 17 Nov., 1841, Q.C. 22 Feb., 1868, bencher 15 April, 1868, treasurer 1874 (3rd son of James Russell, Esq., of Rutherglen, near Glasgow); born 25 Nov., 1816; married 15 Sept., 1846, Martha, younger dau. of late Thomas Holme Bower, Esq., of Hale, Cheshire; she died 13 March, 1884.
