She appears to ease her heart by revealing its weakness; but Abelard, at length, put an end to the dangerous indulgence, and, after new troubles and persecutions, died 1142, in the 63d year of his age. Heloise survived him twenty years, employing her time in study and the duties of her vocation. She was skilled in all the learned languages, in philosophy, mathematics, and the study of the holy scriptures. Her letters are written in Latin; and she appears, both in person and mind, to have been the most accomplished woman of her time.

HERBERT (MARY), Countess of Pembroke,

A great encourager of letters, and herself an ingenious poet. Her character on the whole may be fairly judged from the epitaph.

Underneath this sable hearse
Lies the subject of all verse,
Sidney's sister, Pembroke's mother.
Death, ere thou hast slain another,
Fair and learned, good as she,
Time shall throw a dart at thee.
