In 1874 he wa,s elected a member of the Legislative Council, and iu 1890 became a member of the Executive Council. He has served as President and Vice-President of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce. Before entering Parliunient Iu; was a mt'mber of the Volunteer force and held a commission as Captain coiiimaudiiig the St. Kihhi Corps of Royal Victorian Volunteer Artillery.
