WILLIAM ROLLESTON, of Kapunatiki, Rangitata, Can- terbury, New Zealand, b. 19th September, 1831, m. 24th May, 1805, Elizabeth Mavy, daughter of Joseph Bkittan, of Linwood, Canterbury, New Zealand, and has issue, I. Mr. Rolleston who was educated at Rossall School, Lancashire, and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. He was .superintendent of the province of Canterbury from the year 1868 till the aboli- tion of the provinces in 1876. He wa.s a member of the General Assembly of the colony from 1868 to 1893 with the exception of the Parliament of 1887-1890. He was a minister of the Crown during that period for five years, holding at different times the portfolios of lands, education, mines, justice, and (temporarily) native affairs. He is a member of the Senate of the University of New Zealand. Hi'ntnac. Tliis is a branch of the ancient and kniglitly family o£ Eolleston of Rolleston, <'0. Stafford, and springs more immediately from the Eollestons of Watnall, in co. Nottingham. The Herald's Visitations of both tbese counties give Tery full pedi- grees of these families, "nhich trace their common lineage to the time of the Conquest. A writ still exists in which William de I'evcrel, brother of William the Cunqueror, makes a grant of land to AVilliam de EoLLESTON and Amabel his wife. This William de Kolleston d. 1070, and was s. by Malgeos de Eolleston, one of the bene- factors of the Rufforii Monastery {/fee Brifish Musritm, MSS.), who (/. 11-tO, fnmi whom, fourth in descent, was SiK Henbt de Eolleston, Knt., temp.
