The Caevblls of New Brunswick are of an old familv of DuU'h exiraction, long resident in JCnfjland. In the beginning of the 18th eentuTv they were proprietors of considerable landed entute at Goose Creek, near the Kiver Delaware, not far from the present city of Trenton, in IKew Jersey. The Dutch family from whom they sprang was one of wealth and consideration. Between the dates of (heir departure from Holland and their arrival in America, they resided in Yoi'ksbire, I'Ingland, and afterwards in Wales. Sir John Cakvell is mentioned as a lord of the ]iianor of Meaforth or Mellort, temp. Henry ^'III. He was master of ordnance to that king. Lewis C'arvei.l, of Goose Creek, near Trenton, New Jersey, b. 1719 ; left issue, with two other sons and a daughter, a son, Jacob Caktell, I. in the province of New Jersey, 17-19 ; m. first, 1770, in New Jersey. Nancy Starke, and by her had a daugliter Nancy ; he m. secondly, 1784, at Fredcrickton, Mrs. Howard (widow), and by her had a son, Jjcwis; he m. thirdly, at Fredcrickton, 1790, Lavinia Slason, of a well-known loyalist family, and by her had further issue, II. Isaac. III. Henry. IV. Jacob, of whom presently. V. Jedediali. Ti. John. VII. Gilbert. Mr. Jacob Carvell, at the commencement of the revolutionary war, was noted for his staunch adherence to the C'rown, and on this account M'as obnoxious to the revolutionaiy party. In the winter of 1774-75, he was arrested by the rebels and thrown into prison, where he was kept for a long time, during which he was cruelly treated, but finally escaping, he joined the 2nd battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers, famous in loyalist annals. He served with honour diu'ing the war, and Mas wounded towards its close at the battle of Bunker's Hill, a bullet passing through both cheeks. At the peace he embarked at New York, with a large party of loyalists, who were leaving their homes to settle in what is now the province of New Bruns- wick, and landed on the site of the present city of St. John in that prcivince, ISth May, 1783. Sometime later his property on the St. John Biver, above Fredcrickton, was swept awav by a flood from which he and his family narrowly escaped with their lives. Afterwards he acquired a large tract of land in the wilderness of the North Western New Brunswick, now known as Northampton, in Carleton co., where he lived until his death in 1821.
