The elder brother, NicOLAAS VAN OvEBBEKB, i. 1st February, 1691, m. Marie Naiita (b. 15ih January, 1701), a lady of an ancient and noble Frisian family, and had issue, five sons, Mark, Gerrard, Joan, Daniel, and Micolas. The fourth son, Dakiel tan Oterbbke, i. 3rd Mai-cli, 1727, was sent on an official mission by the Dutch Government to Bengal, where he remained and m. Theodora, daughter of Andreas Franciscus IjiliEN'S, a barrister and Fiscaal of Chinsurab, in Bengal, by his wife, Cornelia do MACREGNArLT, descended from Joan deMain-cgnault, a knight of the Golden Fleece, and Colonel of Spanish Infantry, luider Ferdinand of Toledo, Duke of Alva, 1367. Daniel van Overbeke had issue, I. Daniel Anthony, b. 6th February, 1765, was appointed Governor of Chinsurab in Bengal ; m. 1790, his cousin, Sara Leonora, daughter of Jacob ElLBBACnT, Governor of the j^utch possessions on the coast of Coramandel, and cl. 25th September, 1810, liaving by her had issue, 1. The second son, Gerard Ewoitt Overbeek, b. at Cos- simbazaar, Bengal, 14th February, 1767, received on the 16lh December, 1795, his commission under the seal and signature of the secretary of Marine, as first officer ( Ivapt" - Lieutenant - Commander) of the Dutch frigate, the "Castor," of forty guns, biiiig one of that gi-eat armament imder the celebrated Admiral de Winter, equipped for the purpose of retaking tiie Cape, which luid fallen into British hand? in the preceding month of June. This force was fitted out in the Texel, and estapcd the English blockade. got to sea on the 23rd February, 1796, and after many delays, reached Saldanha Bay, Cape of Good Hope, on the 31st July following. Here the Dutch squadron re- mained undisturbed until the 14th August. On the 11th August, 1797, Captain Overbeek was sent on shore for cattle and tt) recon- noitre, and again on the Irith, when he returned with the news of the approach of an English force. Soon after followed the defeat of the Dutch squadron, the British standard was hoisted over the Batavian on board the " Castor," and Captain Overbeek was made a prisoner of war. On his release he went to Cape Town, and having obtained leave remained there some time. On the restoration of the Capi' Colony to HoUaLd, after the Peace of Amiens in 1802, Captain Overbeek retired from the Dutch navy, but often served on c. mmissions of importance in connection with the Dutch government and navy. On the 31st October, 1804, he was appointed quarter and pa master-general at Cape Town, and held this ofiice until the ceding of the Cape to England in 1806, when he retired from public life ; was for many years a trustee of the Colonial Orphan Chamber. He m. 23rd January, 1797, Alida Cornelia (b. 8th December, 1772), daughter of Anch'ies Brink, a member of the High Court of Justice, under the Dutch govern- ment of the Cape in 1771, and by her had issue, I. Jan Daniel, was for many years in the Cape Civil Service, vhere he held the oflice of ('hief distributor of stamps, 6. 8lli June, 1799, m. 29th April, 1821, Wilhekniua AnnaVan Blanckenberg, and rf. 12th September, 1865, leaving issue, with tliree daughters, a son, Gerrard Ewout Immens, hit^e of the master's oflice, Cajje Town, who d. His second son, Jacobus Christotfel de Witte Over- beek, of Cathcart Villa, The Gardens, Cape Town, b. 17tb February, 1806, formerly chief clerk, Colonial Oflice, Cape Town, and later aided actively in the direction of several ot the most important local institutions. He m. 17th May, 1830, Gcrtruida Ilermina (4. 7th Jily, 1-11; d. 30th March, 1883), elc'est daughter of illcn Fredeiick de Haan, an officer in the Dutch army, who held a commission under the Prince of Orange, and in British pay, signed by Frederick, Di.ke of York, commander in-chief, dated 11th May, 1782, and by her had i-:sne.
