Arthur, h. 1S77. III. Maurice. I. Olive. Sir Henry entered the Royal Irish Constabulary 1859, and was appointed resident magistrate in Ireland in February, 1876. In January, 1882, he was selected by government to be one of the five special resident magistrates to carry out the measures necessary for the pacification of Ireland. In January, IS&4, he was appointed Governor of the Bahamas, and in 1887, Governor of Newfoundland, in which year he was made a C.M.G. In November, 1888, he was nominated Governor of Queensland, but did not proceed to that colony, and in December of that year was appointed Ca])tain- Gencral and Governor-in-Chicf of Jamaica and its dependencies. Ho was promoted K.C.M.G. in 1888. Hiiunge. The founder of this family was Richakd Caddell, called Niger (from nhicli the sur- imme of Blak or Blake), who was Portreve (bailiff) of the town of Galway in 1290, and a^ain in 1312. He was Sheriff of Connanght, from 1303 to 1306, and got a grant of Kilton- lagh from Thomas de Ifolbrigge, in 1315. By Emmeline Ltxch, his wife, he had four Bons, the eldest of whom, Walter Blake, alias Caddle, fitz Richard, was a burgess of G-alway, and got a grant of the customs of the town of Grahvay in 1316. His will was dated March, 1357 (31 Edwaed III). He m. Mary, daughter of Stephen Beowxe, fitz David, and by her had issue, I. John, pr0T0?t of Athenry in 1394, m. Margaret, daughter of Le Beux, of Athenry, and made his will 1-120 ; his son, Henry, fitz John, burgess of Gal- way, made his will 1450. By Mary, daughter of Biemingham, of Athenry, he had five sons, of whom, John, fitz Henry, burgess of Galway, made his will 1468, and left, by Juliana FKEBNcn his wife, two sons, and two daughters, of the former, Valentine (Vadyn), fitz John, was bailiff of Galway 1190. He m. Julian, daughter ( f Geoffrey Lynch, ni d made liis will 1499, leaving with another son and ii daughter, 1. John, fitz Vadyn, ancestor of the Blakes of Lehinch and lienvyle. 2. The third son, Geoffrey Blake (fitz Walter) left a son, William Blake (fitz Geoffrey), who was living in 1415, and had a son, John Blake (filz William), was mayor of Galwav in 14S8. He was one of the executors of the'will dated 1168, of John Blake, fitz Henry {see above). He left issue, I. Geoffrey, bailiff of Galway in 1486 i he had a son, Richard, mayor of Gal- way in 1533, who d. 1565, leaving a son, John, who was mayor of Galway in 1578, and d. in loS(). II.
