He is a squatter, has been a magistrate since 1880, and a commissioner of the Melbourne Savings Bank since January, 1891, is chairman of the Com- mercial Bank of Australia, and a director of the Melbourne Gas Company. He was a member of the City Council, 1868-1883, member of the Legislative Council, member of the Tariff Commission, and member of the Education Commission, 1879-83, mayor of Melbourne, 18S0-S1, and commissioner and member of the Executive Couimittee at the Melbourne International E.Khibition, 1880-81. He is part owner of Clare station, and of Yarangobilly station, both in New South Wales, and is a life governor of the following charitable institutions, ^Melbourne Hospital, Alfred Hospital, Women's Hospital, Children's Hos]>ital, Benevolent Asylum, Victoria Infant Asylnni, Blind Asylum, Deaf and l)iimb ,sylum, and Old (.'nlonists' Association. ]lr.
