Dr. Thornton was educated at Merchant Taylors' School, London, and at Queen's College, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. in 1856, and M.A. in 1858 ; was sometime Michel Fellow at Queen's, and received the honorary degree of D.D. in "i 874 ; was ordained in 1858 appointed incumbent of St. Jude's, Whitechapel, in 1859, and rector of St. George's, Birmingham, in 186 1, which living he held until selected to fill the new bishopric of Ballarat in 1875.
