In 1571, the lands of Faulby were granted by i-harter of Wdliam Maxwell, of Avon, to BoBEET A'Shenxan, and on the 13th March, 1592, there was a resignation of the same by Eobert A'Shennan to "William, first Lord Herries, for new infeftment in favour of EoBEHT A'Shenxan, of Dunjop, in the parish of Tongland, and liis spouse, Margaret Char- tcris, and their cliilflren. Eobert A'Shennan, of Dunjop, granted a charter dated 23rd August, 1604, in favour of his son Eobert. This EOBEET A'Shennan disponed Faulby to John Murrav, of Lochmaben. 16th March, 1614. On l(3tli July, 1632, Eobert A'Shen- nan of Culquhae granted a disposition of the remaining portions of his lands to John Halliday, in Glen, and John, Tiseount Kenmave. In 1573, the estate of Torhonskie or Tohouse McKie, which formerly belonged to the McKies, was owned by James A'Shen- nan, who was s. by his nephew, Eobeht A'Shfnnan. In 15S2. he was s. by his son, Egbert A'Shennan, who was s. by his son, James A'Shennjn, who sold the estate to t'le McCuUochs, of Torhouee, in 1620. His second son, EoBEKT A'Shennan, settled in the lands of Beoch in Irongrey, and by his wife, Mar- garet, daughter of John McMillan, by his wife, Margaret Glendonwyn (of the old family of Parton), had issue, Arms — Eegistered in Lyon OfBce. perched ppr. Isabella, daughter of William Gordon, of Brookloch, Kirkpatriek Durham, co. Kirkcadbright, and by her (who was i. at Irongrey, and d. at Brockloch, 1842) , had with other issue, a son, Egbert Shennan, of Lairdlaugh (1818), and afterwards of ISalig, in the parish of Berwick, h. at Irongrey, 1784, m. Catherine daughter of James McMillan, and his wife Jane DorGLAS, of Hillhead, Kirkpatriek Dur- ham, and by her (h. at Hillhead, 1795, d. at Barmoffity, 2ud February, 1871) had issue, Mr William ; II. James ; III. Eobert ; IT. John; T. Alexander; Ti. Watson, of whom we treat ; Tii. Samuel ; viii. David ; I. Isabella; ii. Jane, and lil. Catherine. HENRY SOTJTHEY MACLEAR MONTAGU, of Umtali, Monicaland, South Africa, 6. at Moutray, near Cape Town, 7th June, 1854. Mr. H. S. M. Montagu served in the Cape Civil Service from 1869 to 1876, was Sub Inspector Frontier Armed and Mounted Police from July, 1876, -was promoted Captain Cape Mounted Rifles, October, 1879, and served through five Kafir Wars (medal) ; had command of No. 2 storming column at the final attack on the Chief Moirosi's stronghold (mentioned in despatches) ; served under Sir F. Carrington as Lieutenant 2nd Mounted Rifles and in the Bechuanaland Expedition under Sir C. Warren and resigned 1890 to join the Pioneer Column to Mashonaland. ILincage. The surname of the Montagus was nncienily written in Latin De Monff Aciito, and in English MoNTACUTE, and their first ancestor in England »iis, Dbogo de Monte Acutg, a warrior in the immediate train of Eobert, Earl of Moreton, at the Conquest. From this personage descended the various families of lioNTAcrxE and Montagu. Sir lUiaui Dugdale in his Baronage slates that Sir Edward Montagu, of Hemington, the progenitor of the Earls and Dukes of Manchester, was a descendant of a branch of the family.
