This family descends from the Christ- ians, of Milutown, in the Isle of Man, which estate was acquired in 1511, aud was prior to 1422, established in Wigtonshire, Scotland. The first who settled at Ewanrigg was, EwAN Christian, of Milutown, made deemster of the Isle of Man, 1605, and grandson of WiuiAM McChristen, of Milutown, seventh in lineal descent from William McCheisten, a member of the lIou.se of Keys, 1422. He had a son, John Christian, of Milntown, living 1643, in. Margaret, daughter of John Parker, of Bradkirk, eo. Lancaster, who had a son, Edward Christian, of Milntown, deems- ter of the Isle of Man, m. Dorothy, sister of Edward Wilson, of Dallam Tower, and had a son, EwAN Christian, of Milntown, who pur- chased the estate of Ewanrigg, harrisler-at- law, )H. 1677, Mary, eldest daughter of John Caine, and dying 1719, left with other issue an eldest sou, Jonx Christian, ancestor of the Christians of Ewanrigg and Miln- town (see Burke's Landed Gentry), and a third son, Eev. 'Thomas Christian, vicar of Cros- thwaite, co. Cumberland, 1770, who had with other issue, a third son, Joseph Christian, b. 1748, m. Margaret, daughter of Wattlewohth, aud d. 1829, having by her (who d. 1825, both buried at Mortlake) had a son, EwAN Christian, of Cape Town, b. 25th March, 1784, in. 6th August, 1818, Aletta, daughter of Lieutenant D. Schultz, of the Dutch Artillery, and by her (who d. 31st March, 1882, and was buried at Cape Town) liad issue, I. Henry Bailey, of Eonaldsway and Kragga Kama, the subject of this memoir. II. Ewan Joseph, d. young. III. George Bellamy, in. Alice Owen, daughter of Smith, and has issue, four sons and two daugh- ters.
