In 1847 he was made a jiisticc of the peace for the colony of New South Wales, and afterwards Cor the colony of Victoria, and sometime represented Brighton in the Legislative Assembly of the latter colony. Visiting England, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, ami a Fellow of the ]{oyal ('ulonial Institute. He was appointed a member of the New South Wa'es Commission at the Paris Internatior.al Exhibition in 1877, and in 1870 was appointed a member of the Commission of the New South Wales International Exhibition. He was elected a member of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales, 24lh Novem- ber, 1880, and on the 22nd Augnst following took his seat in the Upper House. He d. at his residence in Mac(iuarie Sireet, Sydney, New South Wales, 31st May, 1886, and was buried beside his father at Brighton, Victoria.
