Mr. Hawkes left England in October, 1839, for New South Wales, having been educated for the Navj- ; but he did not enter the service, and became at the age of 21 accountant at the Bank of Australia, Sydney. He has been in the Civil Service of South Australia for thirty years, having been assistant treasurer to the late Sir Robert Torrens, with charge of the department, afterwards police magistrate of Port Adelaide, and a member of the marine board, finally taking a circuit of nine courts in the country as presiding magistrate.
